Quang Nam province has decided to establish a sea turtle nature reserve in Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An. The nature reserve is expected to cover an area of approximately 40km2, located in the Cu Lao Cham World Biosphere Reserve (Hoi An) which was recognized by UNESCO in 2009.

Accordingly, the sea turtle nature reserve lies in the north of Cu Lao Cham island consists of some islets; including Bai Bac-one of 9 beaches in Cu Lao Cham with sufficient condition as a nature reserve.

The scientific experts of Cu Lao Cham World Biosphere Reserve said, there are two ways to reserve marine turtle including situ conservation and ex-situ conservation. Accordingly, in situ conservation is to create conditions for sea turtle to lays ashore, whereas ex-situ conservation is to bring turtle eggs from Con Dao to hatch.

Cu Lao Cham was formerly the habitat and birth place of sea turtles; however, currently there is no breeding ground for sea turtles in Cu Lao Cham, turtles are repeatedly being caught in the nets of fishermen while laying ashore. Thus, in recent years, there is hardly any sea turtle breeding in Cu Lao Cham.

As planned, the sea turtle nature reserve project in Cu Lao Cham will start from early 2017 to 2019 at a cost of about 1.6 billion VND. Once completed, this will be the 3rd sea turtle nature reserve besides 2 sea turtle nature reserves in Con Dao (Ba Ria - Vung Tau) and Nui Chua National Park (Ninh Thuan).
